Community Spirit in Elmbridge
This week, I have been down to Cobham Day center, Walton Charity and Lower Green Community Association to hear how they are faring in the aftermath of recession. The voluntary sector suffers in any economic downturn, but I was delighted to see all three thriving despite the financial pressures.
The voluntary sector play an important role in Elmbridge, particularly in less affluent areas that have been neglected because of the poor deal we get from central government (in terms of local funding). Charities and community groups are doing some inspiring work - from caring for the elderly, to supporting young mums. However, they are always in need of volunteers to support their activities. If you would be interested in getting involved, please drop me a line at the House of Commons, and I can put you in contact with one of the relevant groups.
(Erika and I join Jenny French - and the local fire service - at Lower Green Community Association's 'Community Day')
