Sport in the Community
On Friday, I visited Cobham Sports Association with Councillor Jan Fuller. It is an amazing local sports club, with great facilities and a strong family dimension. We met the Under 17's Rugby team (below), who recently stormed 55-3 to win the national championships, a fantastic achievement. There was all the camaraderie you expect at a rugby club - but I was particularly struck by how modest they all were.
Not only is the club successful at a competitive level, but it is also inclusive - a family club, offering a range of sports (including tennis and Lacrosse), promoting sport in state schools and encouraging both boys and girls to get more involved. Sport has always been an important part of my life. Whether it is to encourage physical fitness at a young age, promote a sense of team ethic or channel a competitive spirit, sport in the community serves a vital role. My thanks to Paul Reynolds (below) for the invitation, and my congratulations to him and all those involved for building such an impressive local club.
