Lean and Green
On 14 May, the new Prime Minister pledged to cut CO2 emissions from government departments by 10% in 12 months. He also explained how:
'Government department headquarters will ... publish online in real time their energy use so that the public can hold ministers and civil servants to account for their carbon footprint'.
The software model being pioneered in five major government departments - as well as schools, hospitals and businesses - was developed by a local firm, TR Control Solutions. Their technology allows any organisation to monitor their use of electricity, gas and water in real time, which provides the data and transparency to cut out waste. It is an environmental innovation that makes excellent economic sense. So today, I visited the business and met John Taylor, the man who designed and set up the company, based in Hersham Place Technology Park. In difficult economic times, TR Control Solutions is growing (now 12 employees), breaking new technological ground and demonstrating both the scientific and entrepreneurial dynamism Britain needs.
