The Nuclear Option
I have long supported an expansion of nuclear power in the UK, as the most cost-efficient and environmentally sound way to cater for Britain's future energy needs. It is also an area where Britain can develop a high-tech niche, both to broaden our economic base and support the revival of our domestic industry.
On Friday, I visited Delta Controls Ltd, a Molesey-based firm that produces pressure gauges and switches to ensure security and safety in nuclear and oil and gas plants. It is a relatively small business - with around 50 staff - exporting 60% of its products, including to China and South East Asia.

We discussed the impact of the recession (particularly its effect on supply chains), the burden of EU regulation and employment law and the availability of Research and Development credit relief. Operations Manager Dr Chris Webborn gave me a tour of the assembly plant (see below).
I was thoroughly impressed to find yet another high-tech local business engaged in innovative manufacturing in an important sector. It is the kind of small and medium size enterprise that can help drive economic growth and create new jobs in the years ahead.
