Don't disagree with the article here - it is common sense if not spin friendly (most politicians seem to prefer things the other way round); however it is far from the complete picture. It is terrible to miss the opportunity to clean up expenditure policies and structural weaknesses in the public sector also in times of austerity; companies in the private sector do this - the government should be doing it also. This is only being done in a tepid and half-hearted manner to date esp. re: the NHS; without structural change the NHS and other public services remain a political football; open to blanket promises in future in terms of increases in expenditure that deliver little but fiscal deficits in the long term. Demographically this is unsustainable.
