The Risk of Regulating Newspapers

On Thursday, Lord Justice Leveson will publish his report on press standards. This will trigger a substantive Parliamentary debate on whether or not to engage in full-blown statutory regulation of the media.

In advance of the report - and obviously his conclusions and recommendations will merit close consideration and scrutiny - I have written a piece for the Daily Telegraph, tomorrow, cautioning against state regulation of the press, asking what the problem is we are trying to fix, and highlighting the risks for a free media in a democracy.
